The Word of Jesus Still Has Authority

Many words had surely been spoken in the synagogue at Capernaum, but the word of Jesus was different. It was not louder, but truer. He did not explain himself to the darkness or bargain with it; he spoke a liberating command. The tormented man did not remain on the ground. Christ's authority does not seek to crush us, but to restore us to ourselves.

Many voices speak within us too. Fear says we will fail. Shame repeats what we have done wrong. The pressure to perform whispers that we are lovable only when we keep everything under control. These sentences can settle upon us as though they were truth. But Jesus draws near, and his word separates the lie from who we truly are: beloved children of the Father.

Saint Paul reminds us today that the Spirit of God reveals what we have received by grace. The Holy Spirit does not intensify our anxiety; he forms the mind of Christ within us. He helps us discern which voice leads toward love, truth, and peace, and which one closes us in upon ourselves.

Not every struggle will necessarily disappear in a moment today. But you can make one decision: you will not give every inner sentence equal authority. You will believe what Jesus says about you. In his presence, the accusing voice slowly grows quiet, and life rises within you again.
