Do Not Confine Jesus to the Familiar

The people of Nazareth marvel at Jesus' wisdom, yet their wonder never becomes faith. They consider him familiar: they know where he comes from and know his family, so they assume they know all there is to know about him. Familiarity becomes a closed frame. Jesus stands before them, but they see only the carpenter's son and miss the hour of God's visitation.

The same can happen to us. We know the words of the Gospel, the rhythm of our prayers, and the history of our weaknesses. It is easy to say, “This is simply who I am; nothing will change.” Yet Christ desires to act precisely within our ordinary, imperfect lives. Admitting our human limits is not the defeat of faith but an open door. When we stop pretending to be all-powerful, we can entrust ourselves to the One whose power is at work within us beyond what we can accomplish.

The experience of Jeremiah and Jesus shows that God's truthful word is not always comfortable. The prophet is rejected because he refuses to serve his hearers' expectations. Following Christ, then, does not mean harsh judgment, but truth spoken and lived in love. Holiness is not hardness; it is faithfulness to Jesus even when it would be easier to reshape the Gospel around the preferences of those around us.

We are not left alone in this. As Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit guides us into truth, reveals the Father's heart, and forms the risen life of Christ within us. Saint Ignatius of Loyola learned that God is found not only in extraordinary moments. Today he invites us to pay attention within the familiar: the same Jesus you think you already know can prepare a new beginning in you.
