Bring Him the Little You Have

Come as you are. Jesus sees your hunger, your weariness, and the little you are able to give today; none of it makes him turn his eyes away from you.

Today's Scripture

We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish. Bring them here to me, he said.

Matthew 14:17–18

Jesus, I bring you what I have. I do not need to earn your love; in your hands even the little I offer can become a gift of life.

Reflection

Today’s Devotional

Jesus is grieving. After hearing of John the Baptist’s death, he seeks a solitary place, yet the crowd follows him. When he steps from the boat, he does not close himself inside his own pain: he is moved with compassion. Perhaps this is the first miracle in the story. Even through his own wound, Jesus sees the hungry person before him.

The disciples see the shortage: the place is desolate, the hour is late, and the food is scarce. Jesus does not deny any of this. He simply asks them to bring him what they have. Five loaves and two fish. The feeding does not begin with what is missing, but with the little someone is willing to surrender.

You may be counting your shortages today too. Your strength, time, or patience may feel small. But God’s love cannot be purchased by your performance. The Father freely welcomes you to his table, and neither hardship nor distress can separate you from the love of Christ. He feeds you first. Then he sends you so that your hands may carry his mercy to someone else.

Do not wait until you have more. Bring Jesus today’s little offering: an honest prayer, ten attentive minutes, a piece of bread, or a phone call. He will not shame the gift. He blesses it, breaks it, and carries it to places you could never reach alone.

Jesus does not ask why there is so little. He says: bring it here.

Place It in His Hands

Sit quietly for two minutes with open hands. Name one place where you feel you have too little, then say: “Jesus, this is what I bring today. Bless it, and show me whom I can serve with it.” Afterwards, take one small and concrete action of love.

Praise of the Holy Trinity

You Open Your Hand

Heavenly Father

Heavenly Father, we praise you because your creating and providing goodness cannot be bought. You open your hand and welcome the thirsty to your table, even those who have nothing with which to pay.

We bless you for your faithfulness. Your love does not begin in days of abundance or end in times of need. In Christ you have prepared a home toward which we can journey in hope.

Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, we magnify you for your compassionate heart. Even in the quiet of grief, you do not pass by the hungry. You stop, heal, take the little into your hands, and give thanks to the Father.

We adore you because you became broken bread for us. On the cross you gave yourself, and in your resurrection you opened a life that neither death nor fear can take away.

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, we praise you because you remind us of the words of Jesus when scarcity paralyzes us. You teach us not to hide the little we have, but to place it in Christ’s hands with trust.

We bless you because you root us in the love of God. You pray within us, free us from the exhausting effort to earn affection, and give us quiet courage to share.

Holy Trinity, one God, source and fulfillment of all life, glory be to you. You call, feed, and send us. Receive our whole lives today and make them bread of your mercy. Amen.

Morning surrender

I Give You My Empty Basket

Father, I place every hunger before you. You see where I try to buy love, security, or worth from things that cannot satisfy. Turn my heart toward you again.

Jesus, I give you the little I have today: my tired attention, my fractured prayer, and the goodness I can still offer. I no longer want to hide my empty places in shame.

I also entrust to you those whose needs I can see but cannot meet. Keep me from sending them away in indifference, and from imagining that I must be their savior. Show me my small part.

Holy Spirit, teach me to receive before I try to give. Root me in the love of Christ so that I will not seek recognition, but freely share what I have received.

Holy Trinity, one God, I give you this day. Break selfishness within it, bless its small beginnings, and carry your love to someone who is hungry today. Amen.

Remain quiet for three slow breaths. As you breathe in: Your love feeds me. As you breathe out: I place it in your hands.

Carry this with you

I do not have to be enough. Today I place my little offering in Jesus’ hands.
